Vince Staples is the definition of consistent. I've been a fan of his since he put out Summertime '06 back in 2015, and he's been regularly dropping solid projects since then. I had a chance to see him open for Tyler, The Creator back in 2022, my first show post-quarantine show, following the release of Vince's self-titled record in 2021. But this show in Seattle was my first chance to see his own headlining show, in support of his new record Dark Times. No stop in Vancouver on this tour.
This was at the Showbox in Seattle, in the industrial district of the city. This was actually my first show in Seattle. Baby Rose opened the show. Vince came out and trucked through a brisk and tight set. The set flowed like a lot of his tracks and albums; short, to the point, and pretty casual in nature. He hit songs from his three latest albums all in order, almost as if to catch everyone up on tours that did not happen for his projects that came out during the pandemic. It might rub some people the wrong way, but I honestly admire how no frills just about everything about his music and presentation is. He knows what he does best. Standouts for me were "LIL FADE", "MAGIC", and "Étouffée".
