Another late summer show at the Malkin Bowl in Stanley Park, this time with Swedish punk band Viagra Boys. Wild name, I know. It's always funny to gauge reactions when you tell people you're going to see Viagra Boys — lots of raised eyebrows. But if you know, you know! They have a new album out this year, aptly titled viagr aboys. This was the first stop on the North American trek of their tour.
I arrived semi-early, not knowing what the merch offering would be like. The line was quite long, and I still hadn't reached the front when the opener started, but managed to cut the line when they offered those with cash to advance. I got myself a t-shirt — I'm interested to see what reactions I will get out of wearing it.
Die Spitz opened the show. It was a bit surreal seeing a ragtag group of youngsters walk up to Soulja Boy's "Crank That", then proceed to do their metal thing. I commend the bravado.
Viagra Boys' set was electric, opening with my favourite cut from the new album, and one of my favourites of the year in general, "Man Made of Meat". The banter was great throughout. I wasn't in the pit, but I could see that they were really getting into it. I think the set peaked with "Sports" — a stupidly fun song, crafted perfectly for live shows. They closed the encore with "Worms", to the delight of some particularly enthusiastic fans nearby.
