Sabrina Carpenter

Vancouver, BCI'm about as poptimistic as a music lover can come, and Sabrina Carpenter is among my favourites at the top of the charts these days. While I only first heard her music when "Espresso" started gaining traction earlier this year, it's got that nu-disco sound that I gravitate towards when it comes to pop music. "Please Please Please" took on a soft rock sound and definitely had enough character to stand on its own. That was enough for me to jump on tickets for her tour when she announced her new album Short n' Sweet. A couple months later, the album came out and she came through with a pretty solid project.
As far as this show went, at Vancouver's Pacific Coliseum (I imagine Rogers Arena was just not available from a scheduling perspective), it was a hoot. Declan McKenna opened, with some obvious crowd pandering by wearing a Vancouver Whitecaps jersey. Sabrina came out blazing with "Taste", which is honestly now my favourite track of hers. Outfit changes galore, wittiness on full display, and genuine crowd interaction; it all came across as a stellar show from a seasoned performer, despite this being her first headling arena show. Really impressive stuff. The set didn't stray away at all from her two latest albums, Short n' Sweet and emails i can't send, which I think was a great decision. Loved hearing all the Short n' Sweet singles, as well as some of the album cuts like "Bed Chem" and "Juno", and songs from emails i can't send that now seem like precursors to her newer sound, like "Feather" and "Read your Mind".
