Second of two back-to-back nights I've found myself at the Hollywood Theatre, this time to see Nourished by Time, totally unrelated sonically to Autechre from the night before. And definitely more my speed. Nourished by Time is an artist to keep an eye on. For all the synthpop revivalism we've seen in different waves over the past couple decades, I would say he stands out with his lo-fi production and R&B delivery. The Passionate Ones is the name of his new album supporting this tour.
Zsela opened the show. I often find that quality headliners have equally quality openers, even if I'm not familiar with them, and this was no exception. I really do need to get better at checking out openers in advance. Anyways, I have some homework to do here. I was sitting in one of the seats off to the side during her set, and Marcus (Nourished by Time) emerged from backstage and darted right past me at one point. Kinda funny how no one even really clued in. Unique quirk of a smaller show I suppose.
I stepped out to the floor for the main show, and Nourished by Time sounded great. His stage presence was cool and low-key, giving his music and his band the spotlight. He only has about two albums and two EPs to draw from, so he focused heavily on the new record. He did tour his debut record, Erotic Probiotic 2, last year, including a stop in Vancouver, but I missed that one. So it made sense that this tour was mostly about the new stuff. My highlights from the album and the show were "Max Potential" and the non-album cut "Tossed Away". "Daddy" and "Hell of a Ride" were the highlights from his older material.
