Metro Boomin & Future
09.09.24
Vancouver, BCI'm not exaggerating when I say that Future and/or Metro Boomin are responsible for the lion's share of the best trap music ever put out there. So when they linked up for not one, but TWO collaborative albums earlier this year (WE DON'T TRUST YOU and WE STILL DON'T TRUST YOU), it's no surprise that I ended up with tons of tracks to add to the lift heavy playlist. And to put the cherry on top, they announced a tour together, hitting up Vancouver's Rogers Arena.
Seeing as how I had to pay resale for 21 Savage's show in Vancouver earlier this year, I figured this being a similar hip-hop show at the same venue, I would have to be prompt with buying tickets. Turns out I didn't need to, as I believe they were still trying to sell tons of lower bowl tickets up until the day of the show. Glad the show wasn't cancelled though! No clue what made 21 Savage a bigger draw. I had my GA ticket ready to go regardless though.
Wasn't sure what the format would be for this going into it. There was no classic opener. Metro Boomin first came out (wearing a Canucks jersey with "Metro" on the back!) and played a DJ set of some his hits sans Future, like Kanye's "Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 1" and 21's "Bank Account".
There was another DJ, TJ Banks, that played a set before Future came out and played a solo set. Also wearing a Canucks jersey! Backwards with "Pluto" on the front. It was a huge moment to hear "Throw Away", one of Future's finest cuts. He hadn't played it since 2015 (!); I have no clue why Vancouver was lucky enough to get it! Loved hearing "Relationship" and "March Madness" as well.
Finally, following another intermission DJ set with TJ Banks, Metro and Future came out together to perform a bevy of tracks they've collaborated on throughout the years, like "Superhero (Heroes & Villains)", "Low Life", "Mask Off", and their new stuff, like "Like That" (defining track of 2024 right there) and the title track from WE STILL DON'T TRUST YOU. Loved the energy they had together, and they seemed genuinely thrilled to be in Vancouver. I've heard some people express reservations about Future's live performances, but honestly, no complaints from me here! They played a healthy couple hours, well past curfew, until 11:30. Another classic Monday night in Vancouver!
