This is one of the deepest pulls I've made for a live show. Autechre are a bit of an enigma in the world of live music, rarely touring in North America, let alone anywhere. But here they are in Vancouver, playing the Hollywood Theatre in Kitsilano. Funny how it's been over a full year of concert-going in Vancouver since my last show at the Hollywood Theatre, last time being for Sky Ferreira in September of last year. And this also marks the first of four concerts in four nights in what I'm calling my Vancouver Grand Finale, with this stretch of shows really being the only reason I'm not moving sooner.
This is easily the most challenging live show I've seen. Everything is improvised. Nothing is recognizable from their catalogue. It was super abstract, as if I was at an art exhibit and not a concert. I did know that going into this, having read reviews from past shows. But honestly, after experiencing it,I don't think I'm cut out for this kind of thing. Certainly a cool experience, but not something I would stretch myself out logistically or financially for.
