So Fontaines D.C. were slated to play Vancouver's Commodore Ballroom back on September 22. Alas, it was canceled, along with other Pacific Northwest stops to start their North American tour, as frontman Grian Chatten had fallen ill. That was a tough pill to swallow, in a week where I was also supposed to see Childish Gambino in Vancouver -- that one has also been indefinitely postponed due to injury. But I am not one to go down without a fight. While in Ottawa for Canadian Thanksgiving, I managed to swing a day trip on the Saturday to catch Fontaines D.C., fully healthy, at MTELUS in Montreal.
Their new record, Romance is a shift to a more commercial sound, but still just as quality as their previous work. "Favourite" will probably go down as my favourite single of 2024. So it was great to hear that, along all the other great cuts from Romance. And great to see them on their own headlining tour, as the only other time I've seen them was last year when they supported Arctic Monkeys at the Bell Centre in Montreal.
