Well. Here we are, my first show in Vancouver, British Columbia! My home territory for the foreseeable future. And it's 21 Savage (plus JID) that gets bestowed this great honour. Also his first show on the American Dream tour. Geographically being in the pacific northwest, I imagine a lot of tours are going to either start or end here. So we'll either get artists super fresh or dog tired, I suppose!
I had to get myself a resale ticket for this one -- with my move to Vancouver, I was not locked in on presale, and the floor section here had sold out by the time I was certain I would even be in town for the Vancouver date. I'm not sure if selling out is a trend with Vancouver shows... will have to keep an eye on that.
This one was at Rogers Arena, home of the Vancouver Canucks, so it was also my first impression of the arena. Gotta say, it's nothing special. Not a whole lot to see on the concourse. And the arena doesn't have the imposing aura of, say, the Bell Centre in Montreal, or even Scotiabank Arena in Toronto.
As far as the show went, JID injected a ton of energy into the building with his opening set. But I won't lie, and I was prepared for this, 21's performance was not really anything to write home about. His nonchalant, somewhat lackadaisical sound definitely carried through to the show.
Some of the pyrotechnics were cool though! Of course, I loved hearing "Bank Account", and was pleasantly surprised to hear "Many Men". Love the Chromatics sample on that one. While JID did play "Surround Sound" during his opening set, 21 brought him out again during his own set to perform it together. Great moment right there.
