"Not quite my tempo.”
So a couple months ago, I saw La La Land in concert, and now I have followed it up with Whiplash in concert! With composer Justin Hurwitz once again, here in Toronto. At the Queen Elizabeth Theatre this time. Drummer Ray "Quasi" Nelson absolutely stole the show. Honestly, I think this one lended itself better to the live concert format than La La Land. Mostly because of the intensity of the live music in the film itself. But the movie is a total banger too. J. K. Simmons with one of the best performances of the 2010s. Definitely a key entry in the anxiety cinema canon. And side note, for any puckheads out there… Mike Babcock really is the Terence Fletcher of hockey, eh?
