I love Letterboxd because I can look back to see I watched this four times in 2022, including three watches during its initial theatrical run. So it goes without saying that I love the shit out of this thing. Surprised it took me this long to revisit, but yeah, it's just about everything you could ask for in a legacy sequel. The perfect amount of fan service. A colossal technical feat. But we have moments like when Iceman tells Maverick it's time to let go, and Maverick responds saying he doesn't know how — yeah, boys will be boys, and we love our big fancy toys, but there is heart behind all that muscle and gleam. Maverick is an emotionally wounded man. But the faith this movie has in allowing Maverick to pick it all up and put it back together again, after decades of guilt, is truthfully tearjerking to a sap like me. And honestly, before watching this, I wasn't too enthused about the idea of a third Top Gun, but you know what? Screw it, there's gotta be more in store for Maverick et al.

Watched in IMAX at the Yonge-Dungas Cineplex. Part of the 40th anniversary celebrations for the original Top Gun, which I also caught in IMAX a couple days ago. This was in LieMAX unfortunately, so it's still a bucket list item to see this in dual laser IMAX. Gotta think it will happen some day.
