Pretty bleak, and does not paint a pretty picture of growing up, and aging for that matter, in mid-20th century England. Each of these three short films chaotically splices together fragments of memories in a way that somehow feels natural. This is my first Terence Davies viewing, but from what I've read, it feels like a comprehensive offering of the various themes he explored throughout his career.
Watched on 35mm at the TIFF Lightbox, part of the Terence Davies retrospective. My first viewing from the retro. TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey introduced the screening, sharing that the print is on loan from the BFI, who curated the series. He also mentioned that the series is set to travel to Vancouver's Cinematheque next. Cool to see Vancouver getting some love.
