Julie Christie is doing a lot of heavy lifting here. Freewheeling and drifting about, there's a constant understated desire here for something that isn't so superficial. Maybe not from Diana's perspective, but definitely from a directorial perspective. As these doors open up — doors that the film constantly renders metaphorically — it just seems so easy to slide through, leaving apparent circumstantial monotony behind. But by the time a desire to mend things bubbles up, that door reveals itself to be shut. I jumped whenever someone said "darling".
