As a portrayal of wartime paranoia and cynicism, I really don't think it can get much better than this. Truly upsetting witnessing a system built on trust fracture under the ever looming shadow of a regime that was crooked in the worst ways possible. Every shot in this is an unsettling but picture-perfect portrait; a glimpse into a myriad of perspectives that are all tragically ill-fated in their own way. Melville is a master.
